Open Thread: This Is A Game |
Via Shakesville who reblogged from Kotaku. Which really just reminded me so much of the wonderfulness of the Princess Maker 2 Let's Play which I keep meaning to blog about a la The Terrible Secret of Animal Crossing, but the time, you know, it escapes me. (Has anyone here done a Let's Play? Speak up, lurkers!) The Kokatu write-up tickled me immensely but be fore-warned that there is Barbie-doll nudity. Possibly NSFW!
Open thread! Potential topics: let's plays we've enjoyed, links to same, games worthy of a good take down via let's play, and the poor choice of making a gradient between violet purple and pastel pink.

That game is blowing my mind so much with its WTF-ery that I might actually go play it, just for the surrealism of the experience. And I don't even PLAY games much (unless Angry Birds and Words - with Friends! count). I just...wow. This might be a better way to slip into SparklePrincess headspace than Twilight ever was for me!
Also, have I been doing this dating thing wrong for the past 15 years? If I have a boyfriend, is he supposed to give me money every day? I had no idea! What about if I have a girlfriend? Do I give her money? Do we alternate days? Does it depend on which of us asked the other one out? Do our relative levels of butch-osity effect the payment schedule? Does one of us, in fact, have to be butch? If I feel femme one day, does she owe me money? Inquiring minds need to know -- I may not be able to stay single much longer, and now I'm not sure if I can afford to wear jeans while dating!
Ack, *affect*, not *effect*. Damn.
Your boyfriend gives you fifty dollars and 50 gold coins a day? Car washers must make serious bank!
I think it's pretty clear that Carr Wascher's name is misspelled. Carr is actually an ironic fashion boutique designer, as is evident from the polo-overall paired with the linen cravat stuffed into the front. I'm pretty sure his hair is long and tied in a loose queue with a ribbon, just to complete the effect.
True confession: I'm not fully up on the rules of Let's Play. Does it have to be a team effort? How is it coordinated?
Which really just reminded me so much of the wonderfulness of the Princess Maker 2 Let's Play
So I basically spent my day reading that, thank you for the link, it was hilarious.
Huh. I read the Animal Crossing one awhile ago. That one was definitely a fun horror story. I think it was like two years ago that I read it. Did it exist two years ago? Whatever.
Oh yeah: Speaking of that one in particular, I'd rather make a comment about it here than there, since this is more recent. There's another Let's Play, one on youtube, about a guy called DeceasedCrab playing a game called Eversion.
That, too, is a bit of a horror story. A hilarious horror story.
I did a Let's Play once, a video one, but it wasn't very good. I've been meaning to get back into it - I enjoy having projects with observable benchmarks for weekend downtime :) If you want, it's on youtube under Yamikuronue, but it's basically me sucking at megaman and taking 3 times as long as I should XD
I love let's plays, mostly because I love video games but I'm really bad at them. I mostly just watch basic commentary ones, and the person talking is more vital than what game exactly it is. My recommendations on youtube:
NakaTeleeli - mostly obscure games, nothing newer than PS2; he's done 6/7 .hack games, Okami, Space Channel 5 and a lot of fun strange ones.
NintendoCapriSun - large selection of Mario games, Rareware (Banjo Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day), a few RPGs. Can be kind of crude, but in inoffensive ways, mostly just toilet-humor
DeliciousCinnamon - relatively new, been playing a hilariously mistranslated Vietnamese version of Pokemon Crystal.
Let's Play is a SomethingAwful forum - each thread is a different game (or sometimes a series or something). Sometimes, as in the Princess Maker thread, the person running the playthrough will ask for feedback or decisions from the other posters - usually they vote on the thread. There are a lot of different styles.
My own favorite Let's Play's are AccountingNightmare's series of Devil May Cry playthroughs - her commnentary is both interesting and informative.
The ad on the side of the page is suggesting that I play "Hair Salon" which it assures me is a free game.
Adding to the recommendations for excellent Let's Plays -
supergreatfriend did some fantastic work with Illbleed and Deadly Premonition. I particularly recommend Deadly Premonition for fans of Twin Peaks, from which it borrows heavily.
The Dark Id does very funny screenshot Let's Plays, I particularly enjoyed Drakenguard and Nier.
Both of those are available on the archive
yoshesque is currently Bayonetta on the Something Awful forums, highly recommended to anyone who's enjoyed Accounting Nightmare's DMC playthroughs. That thread also regularly links to the Platinum Games official blog which has been (very slowly) posting a Let's Play by the game's creator Hideki Kamiya.
Finally Chip Cheezum and General Ironicus do tag-team commentary on many games. Generally Chip knows the game and Ironicus has never seen it before. I recommend the Metal Gear Solid games, God Hand, Killer7, and No More Heroes. They can be found at http://chipandironicus.com/index.html
What? I watch/read a lot of Let's Play?
Wow. I've never been into dating sims, but the economies in those world must be much better than the one out here. There's no way I could make enough net in this world to have $50 to give to my girlfriend every day. Unless, that is, I'm moonlighting as a fighter For Justice and we're in an RPG world where even the most random of mooks has stashes of cash on them.
I actually prefer the text ones, but OMG LAURA BOW. I might have to watch that one. I love that game. Played it for the first time in my late teens / early twenties and was shocked at how wonderfully messed up it was. I can't seem to get 100% completion, though, and I think it's a bug. *grinds teeth*
My favourite lets play is probably Gut's Wizard guide for ADOM. The target audience is players who enjoy roguelikes but may be coming over to ADOM from another roguelike at which they are already proficient, or who have mucked around with ADOM for a while and got frustrated by dying all the time. Although I'm mostly a pure player and some of the techniques he uses here are a bit "scummy", they still make for an interesting read through, and after trying to do imitate what he did quite a few times, just to see how far I'd get, I developed an appreciation for the skill involved in what he's done here. I'm a fairly old player -- been playing on and off for over eight years and have beaten the game with a gnomish healer (my proudest gaming moment), so I'm not necessarily his target audience, but I did really like his guide:

Hmm. I've never played ADOM myself, just Nethack and Crawl. Maybe I'll go take a look.
@Ana Mardoll
I think that there is a bug in that game, considering I used the official hint guide for Colonel's Bequest and couldn't get a 100% rating on it. They did fix the problem in Dagger of Amon-Ra, though.
That would explain it. The one thing I could never get credit for was noticing that Lillian had a scent. Which is silly, because that's literally one of the first scenes in the game. Somewhere there seems to be a glitch. I really love that game though. Amon Ra was good, but less so imho.
Haha, I've played Princess Maker 2. We were in a new house, the cable wasn't going to be installed for a week so no TV or internet, just a few channels and a laptop that earned the name "pixel daughter generator" because that's what it did, and was the only electronic entertainment we had. I managed to make her a dominatrix, accidentally. x_x
I've not read very many text Let's Plays, just the Utena game because I never quite got over my Utena obsession.
I love let's plays on youtube, I use them for background noise while I write or draw. My favorite is because hercrabbiness does such great commentary and funny voices. She also collaborated on the other Laura Bow game and a great rendition of King's Quest 6. I also like Police Quest with Sven Groot because his accent is pleasant to listen to. And I never got to play the Police Quest games back when, my brother and I were pretty young when this stuff came out and our folks wanted to shield us from violence. Let's Plays are a good way to see those old games for us nonhackers who can't make dosbox work.
Now time has moved on further and you can get games with dosbox preinstalled from Good Old Games which has some of the Sierra games and a lot of newer stuff. I really think it's better to play games first, to really experience the game's world instead of just watching it like a movie, so I only watch Let's Plays of things I've already played and want to see from another person's viewpoint, or things I know I'll never play like Colonel's Bequest.
http://www.adom.de It's a great game. I've played a little Nethack and Crawl, but I haven't won either of them. Adom has an overarching narrative that I felt was missing in Crawl. I think it's also a little more newbie friendly: there are quests to do, so you don't feel like you're just going down through dungeon level after dungeon level until you die of starvation, and the quests, while hard (though get easier once you've gotten better at not dying all the time), give you a reasonable progression through the game. They can be skipped, but they take you to areas where you have a smaller chance of dying. (Gut's tutorial takes your level 1 wizard to a place where a level 35 character would usually have trouble. It's a location that doesn't even open until you have 100 scores on your high score list (not 100 wins, just 100 times of starting the game, wandering about, and dying.))
Nethack seemed to have everything including the kitchen sink, which is fine. ADOM has a lot of things, lots of different monsters, etc., but they're all clearly in line with an overall theme.
All three are good games, and all three are difficult games. ADOM is the only one of the three that I've won, but then, ADOM is the only one of the three I've spent 8 years playing seriously. But if you have experience from Nethack and Crawl, you'll probably win before 8 years is up. When I first started, I found myself in a room like this:
#######

#...<.#
#.....#
#######
and I didn't even know about (s)earch. I just paced about feeling stupid until I starved to death. :)
