So I finally did what I should have done a long time ago, and dug into the code to figure out why Disqus was taking so long to load. I *think* the problem was the location of the code: Disqus was loading last after everything else on the page, which meant that if the Twitter widget was being fussy, all you saw on this end was that, hey, no Disqus! Drat! And so forth.
I *think* I have fixed this by repositioning the code. Let me know if something breaks, if the loading gets worse, or (happily) if I've maybe made things better.
UPDATE: I've also yanked out the Google Ads again because they were also taking forever to load.
UPDATE part two: I'm thinking about yanking the "Recent Rambles" (because it doesn't update in a timely manner and also takes time to load) and putting the "Hierarchical History" up there in its place. Speak now or forever hold, yada yada.
UPDATE part three: Ha-HA! I finally got a Current Comments widget that actually works and displays the commenter name again. Alas, we still don't have the "filter per thread" feature which was very nice and which I miss immensely, but at least we have something working now. In other news, Google is bad and they should feel bad.

And it works! It really works.
Though I do miss the per thread thing (I suggested it) because if I'm going to read the new comments in a thread all I need is one link to it to read all the new comments, so filtering by thread has the potential to not let other threads get drowned out by one high activity thread.

The truth of this statement is both undeniable and actually rather sad. There was a time, I can almost remember it, when Google was good.
It's like Apple. They used to be good people over there, and now they're going all big brother (using your influence over the local police force to kick down the door of someone who has already complied with your every request, seriously?) while Bill Gates is out curing polio. It's like, "What the hell? How did you ever sink so low?"
Especially since Google's internal motto is apparently, "Don't be evil."
I see that Disqus is loading ok. Do you have Blogger set up to work on your mobile blogger templates though? By default the Disqus widget is not set to load itself on mobile, which means that on mobile users will be presented with your old comment form. If you don't have it set up, then you can look at these instructions found by clicking here.
Update: Oh wait, this site doesn't have a mobile template. Is it disabled because of this?
I really like the new current comments widget! Seeing the first few lines really helps me see whether it's a new-to-me comment or not.
Well, that's two votes, so CONSIDER IT DONE. It loads faster now, I do think.
I always scroll down to the History, rather than the Rambles, in case I missed something.

I already ignore the Recent Rambles and check the Hierarchical History for new posts.
